Chennai, 23rd February 2009: EduSports, a group
company of SportzVillage and India’s First and Only Private
Initiative providing Physical Education & Integrated Sports
Management Services to K-12 Schools announced the Indian launch
of Dr. George A Selleck’s pioneering book on developing
coaching excellence, ‘COACH SENSE: Coaching to Make a Difference’.
In an event held at the Crossword Bookstore at T. Nagar in Chennai
today, EduSports, publishers of ‘Coaching Sense’ in
India also announced that Dr.Sellecks, who’s on the advisory
board of EduSports, will be closely working with them to develop
a best-in-class academy for coaching excellence for the Sports
Teachers and Parents in India. The first copies of the book were
presented by the author to Mr. V Bhaskaran, former Captain of
Indian Hockey team who captained the Indian team to Gold Medal
in the 1980 Olympics, in Moscow.
Coach Sense is designed to be a key resource that
can help improve coaching effectiveness and enable coaches create
a lasting, positive influence on their kids. The book offers coaches
at all levels a roadmap for success, with its easy-to-understand,
easy-to-apply thoughts, and guidelines on how effective coaching
can make a real difference to the children’s character.
Very importantly, this book is not just about the technical skills
involved in being a good coach, but is also about how coaches
can help students develop sporting values, grow and develop as
balanced adults, foster healthy relationships, and help strengthen
families and communities. The book was launched in the US in 2007,
and has since been widely used as a reference by the schools,
coaches and parents all over the US.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Selleck, the author,
said, “A good coach carries the responsibility of not only
building the sporting talent but also touching the inner-selves
of these young athletes – and shaping their entire lives.
Physical Education & Sports should be treated as an extension
of the classrooms where the school children have the opportunity
to learn essential life-skills such as relationships and human
values to grow up as healthy, integrated and balanced adults.
Good coaching is much more than just blowing a whistle. As a follow
up to the book launch, EduSports will conduct coaching workshops
based on Coach-Sense in all major cities in India for the Schools
and Parents – starting with a mini-workshop for invited
schools and parents in Pune today.”
Mr. Suhas Nair, Program Director, EduSports said,
“In India, a book like this has relevance at two levels.
All around us, we see the paradox of more and more people wanting
to excel in professional and competitive sport and at the same
time less and less people playing sports for sports sake. As far
as sporting excellence is concerned, it has been said often enough
that our champions happen in spite of the system rather than because
of it. The shortage of coaching talent is visible across all sports;
one only needs to look at the proliferation of foreign coaches
to understand this. Having been a champion sportsman or having
been through a coaching program that lays emphasis on technical
skills is usually
considered to be good enough to be considered a
coach. As a nation that has come to recognize and value sporting
excellence, it is imperative for us to ensure that we have the
coaches in place to deliver excellence.”
Mr. V Bhaskaran, the Captain of the 1980 Olympic
Gold Medal winning Indian Hockey Team, said, “I am very
happy to see that sports coaching is getting the much needed attention.
Coaching is more than just teaching how to play a sport, as a
coach wields tremendous influence on a young athlete’s sporting
skills, character and attitude. The making of a good sportsperson,
entirely depends on the way they have been coached. A true sportsperson
is one who knows how to work as a team, how to drive the team
and how to win / lose as a team. I am sure Dr. Selleck’s
book will go a long way in enabling the coaching community in
India create a holistic coaching philosophy.”
Dr.Selleck’s forty years of experience in
sports training, coaching and sports parenting has helped EduSports
to formulate their philosophy towards managing sports development
in schools. “To us, at EduSports, ‘Coach Sense’
is about driving Sporting Excellence through Coaching Excellence.
We believe that sports is an integral part of education as it
teaches our children key attributes like leadership, interpersonal
skills and team work. Therefore, the importance of a book like
this goes beyond sports itself”. Mr. Suhas Nair added.

Bangalore, 30th January 2009: EduSports, a group company of SportzVillage,
announced the launch of SOAR™ - India’s first Integrated
School Sports Management Platform. The SOAR program has been designed
by a distinguished panel of advisors comprising leading sports
personalities, educationists, psychologists and other professionals
to help Schools all over the country meet the demands for high
quality Holistic Education.
EduSports’ SOAR platform has close to a dozen modules specifically
designed to address the critical needs of Schools, Physical Education
Teachers, Parents and Students for a 360 degree, high quality
sporting experience within the School Campuses. Some of the key
modules within the SOAR ™ include – School Sports
Infrastructure Assessment & Enhancement, Physical Education
& Sports Curriculum Design, Training & Certification of
PE Teachers & Coaches, Health & Fitness Advice to Students
& School Sports Teams, Sporting Talent Spotting & Grooming,
After School Programs & Coaching Camps, Sports Celebrity Interactions,
Good Parenting for Sports, Education through Sports, and On-Demand
Sports Content & School Sports Communities.
Reacting to the announcement, Mr. V. Bhaskaran, the Captain of
the 1980 Olympic Gold Medal winning Indian Hockey Team, said “This
is a major step in the right direction. I am excited to see that
EduSports has taken the initiative to bring a high quality sports
experience straight into the School campuses. Developing a strong
sporting culture is the first step towards developing sporting
excellence and there is no better place to start than the Schools.
Schools have traditionally suffered from poor Sports infrastructure
and sporting know-how because of the lack of importance attached
to sports in the Schools. I am sure that a Curriculum based Integrated
School Sports Management Program such as SOAR will make a big
difference to not only the millions of School going children but
also to Sports in India.”
Explaining the rationale for the launch of SOAR, Mr. Saumil
Majumdar, Co-founder and CEO, EduSports said “Sports
can play a major role, especially in the formative years of life,
in developing the skills required for a successful and purposeful
life. In addition to ensuring student’s health & fitness,
Sports also fosters life skills such as team spirit, interpersonal
skills, confidence, self esteem, right attitude, time management
and the ability to persevere. Unlike the western countries, Sports
have traditionally taken a backseat in the Schools in India especially
when compared to the academics. There is a dire need for a scientific,
curriculum driven sports and Physical Education program in line
with the other academic subjects. In addition, Parents, Teachers
and Coaches need to be aware of all the possibilities and holistic
ways of shaping young minds through the medium of Sports. EduSports
SOAR platform bridges this gap and brings a scientifically designed
holistic Sports experience to the K-12 Schools, Parents, and Teachers.”
EduSports has already introduced the SOAR platform in some of
the leading schools across the country, and the initial response
in the pilot phase has been very positive. Mr. Chinnappa,
Correspondent of Daffodils School in Bangalore, says
“We have partnered with EduSports to implement the Sports
Management Program at Daffodils in a phased manner. In the initial
phase of our work, the response from the students, parents and
the sports teachers has been very encouraging. At Daffodils we
believe in empowering our students with key life skills by enhancing
their sports skills, and we are excited with the possibilities
that exist for this endeavor in this partnership with EduSports.”
SOAR™ will be implemented at School campuses, tightly integrated
with the Academic Curriculum and will seek to promote holistic
education through sports. Talent Spotting in schools for popular
sports like Cricket, Soccer, Basketball, and Tennis will also
be part of the core offering from SOAR. Advanced Coaching for
School Sports Teams and top flight School talent will also be
provided. EduSports plans to implement SOAR in over 1,000 schools
in the next two years, revolutionizing the School Sports scenario
in the country.
